International Universities in China
China Medical University (CMU)
China Medical University (CMU) is located at Shenyang,the capital city of Liaoning province, China. It
was the first medical school established by the Chinese Communist Party. Its precursorwas the Chinese Workers – “Peasants” Red Army Military Medical School and ChineseWorkers – “Peasants” Red Army
Health School founded in Ruining city, Jiangxi province in 1931.After the Long March with the
red army, it moved to Shan-
bee. In 1940, proposed by comradeMao Zedong and approved by the central committee
of Chinese Communist Party, the nameof the school was changed to China Medical
University. In July, 1946 the university was orderedto enter north-east China with the army and reached Xin-
shan city (now He-gang city), Hei-long-jiang province. In November, 1948 the whole north-east
China was liberated and the university
was ordered to move to Shenyang. It merged the former national Shenyang Medical Collegefounded
in 1911 and the former private Liaoning Medical College founded in 1892 (both in Shenyang city).
Over 80,000 senior specialized medical personnel have been educated by CMU since its establishment.
Its graduates are all over
China and some countries and regions of the world. It nurtured so many famous medical experts
and leaders of national health administration and education.
CMU now has 28 colleges, faculties and sections, 130 departments, 56 disciplines (specialties)
were authorized to grant doctor degrees and 67 were authorized to grant master degrees; 16 specialties for
undergraduates and 20 specialties for higher professional techniques; 3 affiliated health
school; a center for Japanese language training and acenter for rural doctors training (both directly
under the Ministry of Health); 2 nation key laboratories and 3 (health)ministerial laboratories;1 national clinical
study base for drug development and 3 national laboratory for research of traditional Chinese medicines; 6 post-
doctoral mobile stations; 29 provincial key disciplines, 8 provincial research and treatment centers, 3 municipal
research centers; 54 educational and research institutes or centers, 8 central laboratories of the university
or its colleges; 15 independent research
laboratories; 3 companies of science and technology. There are 8304 beds in CMU’s 3 affiliated comprehensive
hospitals and one specialty hospital.
The total staff of CMU now is 13710, and 83.7% are professionals of different specialties. Among them
are: one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering,633 professors, 905 associate professors,
472 tutors for doctoral and 522
tutors for masters students. 2 are members of evaluation group of academic degree committee
of the state council, 15 are chairman or vice- chairman of national academic societies.Among young and middle-
aged teachers 35 have been
granted national young talents or other funds, 175 were chosen for provincial training plan for
out standing personnel, 56 were named as provincial young leaders of discipline or distinguishingkey teachers.
The total number of registered students is now 57799; among them
are 1163 doctoral postgraduates, 3951 master students, 9480 undergraduates,
2088 for professional training. 4056 are for undergraduate and professional training by tele-
education, 8935 are receiving adult education for undergraduate and professional
training, and 996 are for secondary professional training. 839 are from foreign countries
and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
CMU occupies a total land area of 1,930,000 square meters with 743,000 square meters of building area.
The library with its more than 1,120,000 volumes of collection is the northeast regional center of
National Medical Literature Resources Sharing Network of the Ministry of Health, northeast knot of
China Medical Information Network, a national health science and technology referee unit for checking
novelty. The laboratory animal center of CMU is also the provincial centers of laboratory animals and
their quality control, breeds 23 species and strains of experimental animals for teaching and research.
So far CMU has established good exchange and co-operation relations with 82 universities, institutes and
institutions in Japan, USA, UK, France, Russia, Korea and Canada etc.
300 internationally famous scientists have been conferred honorary titles of CMU, 5133 teachers have
been sent abroad for research or advanced training. 56 international co- operative projects
have been conducted recently.

Overview
Jilin University, founded in 1946, located in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, is a key national
comprehensive university, under the direct jurisdiction of the Chinese Ministry of Education, supported by Project 211 and Project 985. In 2000, the former Jilin University merged with four other universities, namely former Jilin
University of Technology, former Norman Bethune Medical University, former Changchun University of Science
and Technology, and former Changchun College of Posts and Communications. In 2004, the former University of Military Logistics also became part of Jilin University.
Jilin University has become the biggest university in China by its largest enrollment. It offers the programs
covering 13 disciplinary categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science,
engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, military science and arts. It offers 124 undergraduate programs, 299 master’s program, 237 doctoral programs and 41 post-doc programs.
Jilin University has eight campuses, seven of which are in Changchun and one in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.
Jilin University covers an area of 6.11 million square meters in Changchun and 3.34 million square meters in
Zhuhai. The main university library is recognized by UNESCO, UNIDO and the World Bank, and boasts a collection

The First Clinical Hospital
Introduction
The First Clinical Medical Hospital was established in 1949 as a comprehensive teaching hospital; integrating
medical treatment and teaching research. It is the first standard third rank hospital of Jilin Province and among
one hundred good hospitals of the nation.

The Second Clinical Hospital was founded in 1948 as a comprehensive clinical institute, with an area of 4,136
square meters in the center of Changchun City.
The Third Clinical Hospital
The Third Clinical Hospital (Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital) was founded in 1949 as the Surgical School of the
China PLA Changchun Medical University. In 1957, its department of general surgery announced the first
successful maximum excision of liver ever made in China.
College of Basic Medical Sciences
The College of Basic Medicine was founded in May 1949 as the Basic Medicine Department of Norman Bethune University of Medical Science. It is the basic medical education and research base of Norman Bethune College of Medicine.The college consists of 18 teaching and research departments: human anatomy, histology and
embryology, physiology, biochemistry,pathogenic biology, immunology, pathology, pathological physiology, law,
pharmacology, genetics molecular biology, etc. The Institute has provided the society with large numbers of high-
level teachers of basic medical education since it was established, and the teachers and doctors graduated from
the Institute has actively emerged in the front-line of domestic and international basic medical education and
research and most of them have become academic leaders or key members.

First of all, please note that the International Students' Office of Jilin University ( liuxue@jlu.edu.cn) will make arrangement for your accommodation. However, if you have a different arrangement for accommodation, then you should contact the office in time for approval and registration.
For those registered in a long-term study program, it is quite common to rent an off-campus apartment either alone or with others. It will be very easy for you to find information about apartments for rent either in local newspapers or on the notice board. There will be apartment to your satisfaction in terms of its area, price, and setup in it.
Jilin University owns five halls of residence for international students on its campuses, such as the Friendship Hall, all of which have nice and quiet surroundings with strong academic atmosphere. In the Friendship Hall, your options include single or double rooms furnished with necessary facilities such as bed, bookshelf, chair, desk, showerhead, satellite-TV, telephone, and the Internet. Each floor in the hall also provides public facilities such as kitchen and washing-machine (insertcoins to operate). If you would like to try the food service, each hall of residence has its dining hall where different types of flavors are presented to cater for your tastes. Moreover, other dining halls for university students in each campus will also be able to serve you with delicious food. If you would like to cook by yourself, there are public kitchens available in each hall of residence. At the same time, you will be pleased to discover that there are grocery stores and shops nearby. There you can buy all types of things you need for cooking with cheap prices and great variety. Dining outside enables you to enjoy the famous dish in each Chinese cuisine. Meanwhile, you can find restaurants with European, or Japanese, or Korean flavors in the city. You can easily locate KFC, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut or sure.
Communication
Telephone has been popularized in China. It is a simple process to get a phone-line. You can also choose to use public phones if you have IP phone card, which will lower your fees on distant calls greatly. Mobile phones are also very common with easy access. Furthermore, you can easily find public telephone booths along streets, in the airport, or railway station, or other public areas. However, most of such telephones require the usage of IC card not coins, which is different from the practice in other countries.
